In more than a decade that I have been flying across the lenght and breath of Nigeria and beyond, today's experience has taught another lesson of humility and simplicity.
I got to Abuja airport with the intention to board Overland airline to Ibadan as I have a show to catch up with in Akure tomorrow morning.
Suddenly, we were asked to board and passengers took their respective seats but a twist of faith happened as the airline the Overland airways could not fly due to bad weather.
We were asked to be patient while the weather is clear enough for us to take off. Soon, we were told that we would be flying again but as the plane moved to take off, it slowed down again, and we were told we could not fly again.
This time, it was not the weather but the aircraft needed to be refuelled.
It made a U Turn and we got back to where we were.
This time it was getting to some minutes to 5pm, and we couldn't just fly as the situation even got more tensed with passengers apparently troubled and arguements ensued from different angles of the aircraft.
While all of this lasted, none of us knew that the Governor of Oyo State, Engr Seyi Makinde, was also in the aircraft while the trouble lasted.
Calm, in his usual manner, the governor was quietly observing the situation along side aides.
Many people were not aware of the governor's presence until we had all disengaged and had to file into the aircraft the third.
He warned his way into the hearts of many with his humility and calmness that is uncharacteristic of an average of Nigerian politician.
The governor never raise an eyebrow neither made any move that suggested he was worried.
He humble boarded the flight and we arrived at the Ibadan airport where he got into his waiting escort without using the siren.
I have never experienced such humility in my life. Today, the governor has won over a new fan to his side.
